Getting Around
St. Croix

Taxi Options - There is NO Stateside Rideshare Option

There is no Uber, Lyft, or other major ride-share companies operating on St. Croix. There are official taxis with an association and published rates, unofficial taxis with less formal rates, and some newer companies attempting to break through. Often, the best drivers are better found by referral than listed. Quality and availability is widely varied and your experience may be as well.

Taxis are easy to find at the airport, and the cruise ship pier when a ship is in port. The rates for taxi rides from the airport are posted and the August 2024 rates are shown. As the sun sets, and in less popular areas, a taxi can be harder to find. It is definitely wise to determine your fare with the driver before departing.

There is a newer option which claims a true ride-share structure. When you download the app, things look very similar to the more familiar companies. There are online payments with "competitive pricing", driver ratings, and driver tracking. The claim is that this, "revolutionizes the way you commute with fast, easy, and reliable rides." This is not the first attempt to unseat what some locals call the "taxi mafia" and hopefully this one lasts.

Drivers are generally polite... sometimes to a fault. Slow down and be kind to others. Unusual situations can be the most complex, like parking lots or remembering that left turns are easier than right. The advantages of less planning and more enjoyment is an island thing, so find the beach of the day, the food of the day and the drink of the day... it can be a blessing to be in charge of the now.

Driving on the left requires a mental shift for most folks, especially since the steering wheel remains on the left. In addition, many vehicle headlights are designed to favor the right shoulder which means headlights can appear brighter.
